Research Themes
The RECOUP research programme speaks directly to meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as set out in the Millennium Declaration endorsed by 189 nations-and signed by 147 heads of state and governments during the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000.
More specifically, the education MDGs presume that completion of primary schooling by all children - along with the complementary changes implied by the other Goals - will help to halve world poverty by 2015. Many now wish to encompass secondary schooling, where measured gains in health, fertility-reduction and other desired outcomes seem even more strongly evident. Improved understanding of the relationship between educational outcomes and pro-poor development will thus be of particular interest to those charged with MDG implementation and monitoring, including UN and bilateral agencies, the World Bank, and the governments and NGOs involved in the national implementation process.
Reflecting our main research questions, RECOUP research projects are grouped under three broad themes:
1. Social and Human Development Outcomes of Education
- Disability and Poverty
- Health and fertility
- Youth, gender and citizenship
2. Economic and Labour Market Outcomes of Education
- Skills acquisition and its impact upon lives and livelihoods
3. Outcomes from Partnerships in Education between Governments, Aid Agencies and Households
- Aid partnerships and educational outcomes
- Public-private partnerships in the provision of education
