Centre for the Study of African Economies, University of Oxford
CSAE, a leading research centre for the study of economic development in Africa, also works on South Asia and China, and is part of an ESRC funded Global Poverty Research Group. As well as conducting rigorous research, publishing a prestigious journal, and hosting regular international conferences, the Centre trains doctoral students in development economics. CSAE members have made seminal contributions to understanding: the role of education in influencing economic outcomes in Africa and India; the political economy of education in India; gender bias in the within-household allocation of education expenditure; the impact of school inputs on student achievement; the use of firm-level, labour market and household survey data from a range of countries, and the collection and use of school data. Collaborative Research and Dissemination (CORD), New Delhi, India
CORD is committed to giving voice to the problems of the disadvantaged in an attempt to influence policy and public opinion. The three key members were part of the team which brought out The Public Report on Basic Education (Oxford 1999). CORD is also involved in health and labour issues but its particular focus is education, particularly issues relating to universalising good quality elementary education, child labour and incentive schemes, and the role of private schools. It has recently completed a study on schooling and work in the lives of disadvantaged adolescents. CORD conceptualises and undertakes survey work, data analysis and report writing with a high degree of professional and personal commitment. Founded in 1965 to provide secondary education and teacher training, Kenyatta University became an independent full-fledged university in 1985. The University offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in six Faculties: Arts, Commerce, Education, Environmental Studies, Home Economics, and Science. The Faculty of Education is exceptionally strong as it has the responsibility of training teachers for secondary schools and Teacher Training Colleges. Academic facilities include the Basic Education Resource Centre, the Appropriate Technology Centre and the Bureau of Educational Research. This Faculty still remains one of the largest faculties of education in East and Central Africa. Kenyatta also houses the Performing and Creative Arts Centre and the Culture Village, which has brought together many cultural aspects from various Kenyan Cultures. Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre, Islamabad, Pakistan
MHHDC is a policy research institute and think tank, established in 1995. It organizes professional research, policy studies and seminars on economic and social well-being. Work over the last few years concentrated on poverty, education, governance, women's empowerment and gender equality, globalization, agriculture and rural development, employment, health and human security in South Asia, with a special focus on Pakistan. The Centre publishes an annual report entitled, Human Development in South Asia, which highlights important policy issues and provides widely-quoted in-depth analysis and information for academicians, policymakers and students. In addition, the Centre's semi-annual journal brings together original work by researchers from all over South Asia and beyond. The School has a long history of engagement with development issues. The Centre for African Studies, has more than 30 years experience of research on issues of education and labour force interactions in Africa and has enduring relationships with many African institutions. It currently hosts a project on 'Beyond the Basics: Education and Poverty', funded by DFID under its Policy-Oriented Research Programme.
