Situation in Kenya

23 January 2008. RECOUP activities in Kenya have been facing challenges due to the prevailing political situation in the country. Tensions are still high and communities continue to treat each other with suspicion in the two project field sites in Nyeri and Nairobi, says the latest report from Fatuma Chege. Our colleagues express hope that the multi-ethnic team in Kenya shall be perceived positively in Nyeri. The situation in Nairobi is less predictable and the partners continue to treat the site with caution and may not engage in further research there until they get an explicit indication of safety for its research teams.

They continue monitoring the Nairobi site and are seeking opportunities to extend gestures of sympathy to the community, if possible, through face-to-face contact. In different ways, many of the researchers have been contributing to humanitarian activities organised for internally displace people (IDP) from the research area. Thus, the research team has raised funds to buy foodstuffs, specifically for communities in the Nairobi site.
