Disability and poverty project launched

disableThe disability and poverty project was launched in India in December 2007 with a disability training workshop, piloting of interview schedules, and scoping trip in Dewas. Nidhi Singal and Roger Jeffery facilitated qualitative methodology refresher training and a disability workshop for CORD researchers. At the workshop, the researchers discussed the purpose of the project, which is to give voice to those who are disabled and explore the attitude of society towards the disabled and the kind of facilities which are available to them. The project will explore these themes based on interviews with 15-30 year olds with visual, hearing and physical impairments. The links between disability and poverty are especially important in the context of research in India, says the latest report from CORD.

Skills project fieldwork completes

skillsIn November 2007, three teams completed fieldwork under the project 'Skills acquisition and its impact upon lives and livelihoods' in Alwar province, India. The project examines how and under what conditions, the main long- and short-term skill training systems contributed to positive labour market outcomes for the poor. The fieldwork involved interviews with young people who received either public or non-state skills training. The team is now translating and processing data collected during the fieldwork.

Update on household surveys

nnsThe India household survey, which began in November 2007 with a sample of 1020 households in six districts of Rajasthan and Madya Pradesh, is being run successfully, reports our partner in India. A week-long residential training for twenty researchers and a two-day training workshop for field researchers at each field site (Shajapur and Dhaulpur) preceded the survey. The survey in four districts is almost completed, and is due to be finished by the end of February 2008.
