Centre for Education and International Development

Education plays a central role in the development of nations. The Centre for Education and International Development (CEID) investigates the many ways in which this occurs. It seeks to explain patterns of access, quality and outcomes of education in developing countries, and to demonstrate how they can be improved. Recognizing that education is a target for much development assistance, the Centre examines new aid approaches which can help to improve its educational impact.
A current focus for its work is the Research Consortium on Educational Outcomes and Poverty (RECOUP) - a multi-disciplinary research team comprising seven institutions in India, Pakistan, Ghana, Kenya and UK, co-ordinated and led by the Centre. RECOUP is investigating how education affects the lives and livelihoods of people living in poorer communities in the South, and the policy interventions that might best support them. Graduate students are supervised by staff affiliated to the Centre, it has an extensive publications programme and hosts a forthcoming book series entitled Routledge Studies in Education, Poverty and International Development (edited by Madeleine Arnot and Christopher Colclough).
The CEID provides a natural home for multi-national research partnerships and is well-placed to exert research-led influence on educational policy in the countries of the South, and amongst the international community.
